So instead of waiting for the G-men in the other Washington to make up their minds, frustrated leaders from more than a dozen area law-enforcement agencies are doing it on their own.

The agencies participating in the program, funded by the civilian-led Naval Criminal Investigative Service, will have unprecedented online access to local, state and federal databases and will be able to tap into those files with a Google-like search engine as early as next spring.
