Ex-Gen. In Charge Of Military Tribunals

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon Wednesday appointed a retired general to head the controversial military trial system created for alleged terrorists.
Maj. Gen. John D. Altenburg, a military lawyer for 28 years, retired in 2001 as the Army assistant judge advocate general. He will replace Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz as the "appointing authority" for the military commissions.
